Former Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova has received a four-year suspension from professional tennis due to her refusal to undergo a doping test in December. Last year, the former world No.6 expressed her frustration on Instagram when a doping control officer appeared at her residence for an out-of-competition test, considering it a severe breach of her privacy.
Vondrousova, who claimed victory at Wimbledon in 2023, labeled the incident as a significant intrusion into her personal space. In a recent statement in April, the Olympic silver medalist disclosed that she had reached a breaking point and felt scared when someone rang her doorbell late at night without proper identification or adherence to protocol. She clarified that her reluctance was not to evade the test but rather out of concern for her safety.
Additionally, Vondrousova revealed that medical professionals diagnosed her with Acute Stress Reaction and Generalised Anxiety Disorder. The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) confirmed that she was charged with refusal to undergo testing. The ITIA imposed a four-year ban, citing a lack of compelling justification for her noncompliance.
In a statement released by the ITIA, they announced that an independent tribunal had suspended the Czech tennis player for four years for her refusal to partake in an anti-doping test in December 2025. Vondrousova failed to provide a sample during an out-of-competition test at her residence around 8 pm on December 3, 2025. ITIA emphasized that the starting point for sanctions in such cases mirrors those for positive tests to prevent individuals from circumventing shorter bans by refusing testing.
Karen Moorhouse, the CEO of ITIA, acknowledged the discomfort of the testing process but stressed its necessity to ensure fair competition. Moorhouse emphasized the importance of safety and welfare for both players and testers, highlighting the essential role of unpredictable testing in safeguarding clean sports.
During the tribunal, Vondrousova cited stress, mental health issues, and safety concerns as factors influencing her decision. The testimony of the doping control officer who attempted the test was also considered. Despite the factors presented, the tribunal concluded that there was no compelling justification for Vondrousova’s refusal.
