“Rise of Hantavirus Cases on Luxury Cruise Ship”

An upscale cruise ship is facing a rise in suspected Hantavirus cases, with seven individuals showing symptoms of the illness. The MV Hondius cruise ship, carrying around 150 passengers, is currently under quarantine in West African waters as health authorities work to contain the potential outbreak. The World Health Organization confirmed seven cases, including two lab-confirmed and five suspected cases of Hantavirus.

Hantavirus, a rare disease transmitted by rodents to humans through contact with infected rodent excreta, has already claimed the lives of three passengers aboard the Dutch liner. Other cases involve one critically ill individual and three with mild symptoms. The onset of symptoms occurred between April 6 and 28, 2026, with reported signs such as fever, gastrointestinal issues, pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome, and shock.

The WHO is actively investigating the situation, conducting further laboratory tests and epidemiological inquiries while providing medical care and support to passengers and crew members. Detailed case studies revealed the experiences of affected individuals. For instance, a Dutch male aged 70 initially had fever and mild symptoms but later developed respiratory distress and succumbed to the illness. His wife, aged 69, exhibited gastrointestinal symptoms and tragically passed away after contracting the virus.

Another passenger, a 69-year-old British man, sought medical assistance onboard for pneumonia symptoms and was urgently evacuated for intensive care in South Africa. A female adult also faced pneumonia symptoms and unfortunately passed away. Three other suspected cases with high fevers and gastrointestinal problems remain on the cruise ship, including a British crew member.

The cruise operator Oceanwide reported the situation, stating that three passengers had died, one was in intensive care in Johannesburg, and two crew members required immediate medical attention. As of May 3, 2026, Cape Verdean authorities had not granted permission to disembark passengers needing medical care or to facilitate medical screenings onshore.
