Isack Hadjar has lost his first Red Bull podium finish after Alpine successfully appealed the two five-second penalties given to Pierre Gasly during the Monaco Grand Prix. Gasly was penalized for speeding in the pit lane, but he argued that he had activated his speed limiter on time. The appeal hearing revealed that there were inaccuracies in the timing loops used to measure car speeds, leading to Gasly’s penalty being overturned.
Alpine’s Right of Review request was accepted by the FIA, supported by new evidence from Formula One Management about the timing loop inaccuracies. Gasly’s penalties were the only ones to be rescinded as no other team lodged a similar appeal. Following the hearing, Gasly was reinstated in third place.
The stewards clarified that Gasly did not exceed the pit lane speed limit and therefore the penalties were removed. While Gasly benefited from the decision, other drivers penalized for the same reason could not appeal as their penalties had already been served. The stewards emphasized that they could not reverse penalties that had been completed and no other team requested a review within the allowed timeframe.
