Professional golfer Rory McIlroy is taking a brief hiatus at his newly acquired mansion in the UK before gearing up for the upcoming US Open. Recently competing at the Memorial Tournament in Ohio, McIlroy secured a tie for 12th place, showcasing his skills on the course.
Following his performance in Ohio, the 37-year-old golfer, currently ranked No. 2 in the world, scored an impressive four under par as he prepares for the third major tournament of the year. Opting to skip the Canadian Open this week, McIlroy has flown back to England to spend time at his new residence in Wentworth, located on an exclusive estate in Surrey.
McIlroy, a two-time Masters champion, made the transatlantic journey from Dublin, Ohio to his UK home, where he plans to stay for six days before heading to Southampton, New York for the US Open at Shinnecock Hills, covering another approximate 3,500-mile distance.
The decision to prioritize family time at his new estate means McIlroy will miss the chance to compete at the Canadian Open, with a substantial prize pool of £7.3 million and a £1.3 million top prize for the winner in Toronto.
Recently speaking about his break, McIlroy mentioned, “I had a couple of weeks off and we got ourselves settled into our house in London for the summer. It was nice to be there for the last 10 days.” The golfer and his wife, Erica Stoll, have been renovating their £9 million mansion, enhancing its features as they transition from their previous residence in Florida.
While residing in Jupiter, Florida, McIlroy and Stoll lived in a lavish £16.5 million mansion, purchased from golf legend Ernie Els in 2017. Their new home in the UK places them among esteemed neighbors like Elton John and Cliff Richard, as well as the affluent Sultan of Brunei, with a staggering net worth of £22.3 billion.
Reflecting on his recent performance and upcoming challenges, McIlroy acknowledged areas for improvement in his game, particularly focusing on his driver consistency. Despite current challenges, McIlroy remains optimistic about his prospects at the US Open, aiming to secure his second major title of the season at Shinnecock Hills.
As McIlroy continues his preparations for the prestigious tournament, fans and golf enthusiasts eagerly anticipate his performance on the course.
