Iran has raised concerns that the delicate ceasefire in the Gulf could be in jeopardy after issuing a warning declaring, “We are only at the beginning” following clashes in the Strait of Hormuz.
Shortly after, the UAE heightened its alert status amid fears of another round of missile attacks and potential drone strikes. The warning from Iran coincided with leaked US intelligence reports indicating minimal impact from US and Israel strikes on Iran’s nuclear program.
The statement from Tehran’s parliamentary speaker, Mohammad Ghalibaf, followed recent incidents where cruise missiles targeted the UAE and Iranian gunboats were struck. Ghalibaf emphasized the evolving situation in the Strait of Hormuz, blaming the US and its allies for compromising shipping security and energy transit through ceasefire breaches and blockades.
The US defense secretary countered criticisms of the new US initiative, Project Freedom, aimed at ensuring free passage for trade vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. He stressed that the operation is distinct from previous military actions and reiterated that the focus is on maintaining navigation freedom while highlighting Iran’s aggressive actions in the region.
Recent developments included Iran launching a barrage of missiles and drones at the UAE, resulting in limited damage and casualties. Furthermore, US forces engaged in defensive actions, intercepting Iranian boats in the Gulf to safeguard critical shipping routes. The US Central Command refuted claims of American ships being targeted by Iranian forces.
Iran condemned the US actions as violations of the ceasefire agreement. Despite ongoing tensions, intelligence reports indicated that Iran’s nuclear weapon development timeline remained unchanged, suggesting a significant time frame would still be required for Iran to acquire nuclear capabilities.
The current approach by the US has been to target Iran’s military infrastructure strategically, focusing on conventional military assets rather than directly disrupting nuclear-related facilities. The hope is that Iran will opt for diplomatic solutions and abandon its nuclear ambitions.
In response to the conflict, Iran proposed a resolution calling for the lifting of sanctions, cessation of hostilities, withdrawal of forces, and an end to blockades in the region. The situation remains tense as both sides navigate the complexities of the ongoing crisis in the Gulf.
