“Universal Credit Travel Rules: Stay Informed Before Summer Holiday”

Universal Credit recipients looking to take a summer vacation should be mindful of the regulations set by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) regarding travel plans.

Individuals can travel outside the UK for up to one month without affecting their Universal Credit entitlement, but they must inform the DWP accordingly. This notification can typically be done by updating their online journal or contacting the Universal Credit helpline.

While abroad, claimants are still required to adhere to their agreed commitments, which may include actively seeking employment, especially for those in the intensive work search category who are expected to dedicate 35 hours per week to job hunting.

Exceptions to the one-month limit apply in certain circumstances, such as for medical treatment abroad, allowing for a stay of up to six months. In the event of a close relative’s death, an additional month abroad is permitted.

Universal Credit consists of a standard allowance, which serves as the base payment before factoring in any additional elements like childcare or health-related support, as well as any deductions such as savings or debts owed to the DWP. Earnings from work also impact payments through a taper rate mechanism, reducing benefits as income increases.

Specific allowances and amounts vary based on individual circumstances, including singles, couples, children, limited work capability, carers, and work allowances. A detailed breakdown of additional elements and deductions for Universal Credit payments can be accessed on the GOV.UK website.
