“Ibiza Bookings Double: Top Choice for UK Families”

A popular travel company has disclosed that bookings to a specific Spanish destination are expected to double this year, leading to a surge in visitors amid global uncertainties.

Recent data from lastminute.com indicates a growing trend among British travelers to opt for short-haul destinations perceived as safe, with Spain emerging as a top choice for summer 2026. The report highlights the top six Mediterranean beach holiday spots for British families during the upcoming May half-term, with one particular island experiencing a 100% increase in bookings compared to the previous year.

Ibiza, which already attracts approximately three million tourists annually, including 800,000 Brits, is anticipated to be a key destination for the upcoming half-term period. The surge in bookings, revealed by lastminute.com, suggests that visitors to this Balearic island may encounter more crowded beaches than usual.

Factors contributing to the spike in bookings include Ibiza’s proximity to the UK, favorable weather conditions in May, and uncertainties surrounding other popular destinations such as Cyprus and Turkey.

Despite its reputation as a party hub, Ibiza also caters to families, offering child-friendly beaches with shallow, turquoise waters ideal for paddling. The island provides various activities ranging from boat excursions on calm waters to leisurely hikes. Additionally, Ibiza features attractions like the Sirenis Aquagames waterpark and Slingshot Ibiza, providing entertainment for visitors of all ages.

However, the surge in British tourists could potentially fuel anti-tourism sentiments on the island. In recent years, Ibiza was one of the destinations in Spain where mass protests were staged to address issues related to overtourism.

Apart from Ibiza, other short-haul destinations experiencing a spike in bookings include Tenerife, Malta, Costa Blanca, Majorca, and the Algarve in Portugal. These regions have seen increases ranging from 21% to 51% in bookings compared to the previous year.

According to Zoe Fidler, head of brand and PR at lastminute.com, British families are prioritizing convenient and sunny getaways for the upcoming May half-term holiday. Short-haul destinations are particularly popular as families seek reliable sunshine, short flights, and affordable vacation packages.
