Chinese authorities have been accused by US officials of concealing information about a tragic incident where a pilot intentionally crashed a plane, resulting in the deaths of all 132 individuals on board. The US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has indicated that China Eastern Airlines Flight 5735 plunged into mountains in Guangxi province due to the deliberate actions of the pilot. Allegations suggest that Beijing suppressed details regarding the March 2022 Boeing 737 crash.
Evidence from flight recorder data revealed that the plane’s engines were manually turned off and the autopilot disengaged, leading to a rapid descent towards the mountains. Analysis showed conflicting inputs on the pilot’s controls, indicating a struggle between the two pilots for control of the aircraft.
During the flight, at an altitude of 29,000 feet, both engines’ fuel switches were moved from the run position to cut-off, resulting in a decrease in engine speeds, according to the NTSB. Despite the turmoil in the cockpit, no distress call was made, and no emergency transponder code was transmitted prior to the crash.
This aviation disaster has become a contentious issue in China’s recent history, with accusations leveled against Beijing for concealing the truth despite growing demands for transparency. Initial reports pointed to pilot error, with suspicions that someone in the cockpit directed the plane’s actions. However, the official investigation findings have not been made public.
The crash, involving Captain Yang Hongda, First Officer Zhang Zhengping, and Trainee Second Officer Ni Gongtai, has raised speculation, particularly around Zhang, a senior pilot who had reportedly lost his captaincy recently. This incident is part of a series of tragedies suspected to be linked to pilot suicide, similar to the case of the 2015 deliberate crash by co-pilot Andreas Lubitz in the French Alps.
There are also lingering doubts about Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370, which vanished in 2015, with suggestions of intentional pilot misconduct. These incidents underscore the importance of thorough investigations and transparency in aviation safety.
