In a daring operation, a courageous police diver was lowered into a river infested with crocodiles to recover the body of a massive predator suspected of having consumed a missing man.
Captain Johan “Pottie” Potgieter, a police captain from the Mpumalanga diving unit of the South African police service, was deployed into the river in the northeastern region of the country.
The concern arose when human remains were found inside the crocodile, possibly belonging to the missing individual, Gabriel Batista, aged 59. The incident occurred when Mr. Batista attempted to cross a flooded low-level bridge in Komatipoort, South Africa, last Monday.
After his vehicle was swept over the side of the bridge by fierce currents, Mr. Batista is believed to have exited the 4×4 Ford Ranger to try to reach safety by wading through the rising waters.
Officials suspect that he was carried down the Komati River towards the border with Mozambique, where crocodiles awaited their meal.
It remains uncertain whether Gabriel drowned before being preyed upon by a crocodile. The predator was later euthanized, and it is being investigated whether other crocodiles may have fed on his remains.
Gabriel, the respected proprietor of the Border Country Inn and Sports Bar, located close to the river prone to flooding, went missing. Following days of surveillance using a drone, the suspected culprit crocodile was located, eliminated, and transported away from an island where numerous crocodiles resided.
Dramatic footage captured the brave police commander, who secured the suspected predator with a harness, being lifted hundreds of feet into the air to retrieve the carcass.
Upon landing in the nearby Kruger National Park, the half-ton carnivore’s abdomen was opened to confirm if it had consumed the businessman.
Captain Joey Potgieter led the grim discovery of two severed arms with intact hands, part of a rib cage, and chest tissue. A ring believed to belong to Gabriel was also discovered on one of the fingers, with DNA tests underway on collected body samples.
Although none of the six shoes found inside the crocodile matched Gabriel’s, a spokesperson for the Border Country Inn and Sports Bar described him as a beloved family man who frequented the establishment.
The police dive team commander, Captain Johan “Pottie” Potgieter, was lauded for his courage in volunteering to retrieve the deceased crocodile. After monitoring the crocodiles’ activities with a drone, they identified a specific crocodile that was suspected of consuming Mr. Batista.
