“Rare Freddie Mercury Exhibit Opens in Budapest”

An exhibition showcasing Freddie Mercury’s iconic stage outfits and personal belongings, auctioned for £40 million three years ago, is set to open this weekend. The year-long display will feature 1,000 items ranging from stage costumes to song lyrics and even his cherished teasmade.

Peter Freestone, Freddie’s personal assistant, and Tomas Hykel, a devoted Queen fan and Czech businessman, spent 18 months tracking down items auctioned by Sotheby’s in 2023. The exhibit aims to bring together the essence of the Freddie they knew under one roof for a year.

The collection was put up for sale by Mary Austin, Freddie’s beneficiary and former fiancée, who decided to part with his entire estate and the contents of his former residence in London. Despite their romantic relationship ending in the ’70s, Freddie and Mary remained close.

The auction saw items such as Freddie’s baby grand Yamaha piano sell for £1.7 million and the Bohemian Rhapsody lyrics for £1.3 million. Many of these items have been repurchased or loaned for display at The World of Freddie exhibition at The House of Music Hungary in Budapest.

The exhibition, marking the 40th anniversary of Queen’s performance in Budapest in 1986, is planned to tour globally after closing in April as a tribute to Freddie, who would have turned 80 in September.

Featuring standout items like Freddie’s iconic sneakers, jackets from music videos, and even his last public appearance suit, the exhibition also showcases his hobbies and personal preferences, offering a multi-sensory experience for visitors.

The exhibit also includes anecdotes of Freddie’s generosity, like his penchant for gifting and creating happiness for others. It is a celebration of Freddie’s life and legacy, curated for fans to enjoy and appreciate for years to come.

The House of Music Hungary in Budapest is hosting The World of Freddie exhibition until April 27, 2027, offering fans the opportunity to immerse themselves in the world of the legendary musician.
