“Study Finds Surge in Obesity-Linked Cancers in Young Adults”

A recent extensive study has identified an increase in eleven types of cancer among individuals aged 20 to 49. The cancers include bowel, breast, ovarian, liver, kidney, gallbladder, pancreatic, thyroid, multiple myeloma, endometrial, and oral. Researchers have linked most of these cancers, except oral cancer, to obesity, possibly due to heightened levels of insulin and inflammation.

Professor Montse Garcia-Closas, from the Institute of Cancer Research in London, emphasized the urgency for further research and immediate action. She highlighted the importance of addressing obesity, particularly in young individuals, through robust public health policies and enhanced access to effective interventions to curb the escalating cancer rates.

A study by experts from the ICR and Imperial College London revealed a rise in cancer rates among younger adults over the past two decades. While traditional risk factors like smoking, alcohol consumption, red or processed meat intake, low fiber consumption, and lack of physical activity remained stable or decreased before diagnosis, the increase in overweight and obesity since 1995 emerged as a significant contributing factor to the surge in cancer cases.

The study, published in BMJ Oncology, emphasized that the rise in body mass index alone does not fully account for the overall increase in cancer cases in younger adults in England. The researchers suggested that additional unidentified causes might be at play in driving this upward trend.

Interestingly, of the eleven cancers studied, nine showed increasing rates in both younger and older adults, with bowel and ovarian cancer being exceptions as they were rising solely in younger age groups. The study also noted a faster rise in BMI-linked bowel cancer rates in younger women compared to non-BMI-linked cases, indicating the involvement of other influencing factors.

Researchers have proposed various factors such as ultraprocessed foods, antibiotic usage, and air pollution as potential contributors to the increasing cancer rates. However, with many of these factors showing stable or declining trends in the UK, a comprehensive investigation into all potential reasons is crucial.

In 2023, approximately 31,000 cancer cases were diagnosed in individuals aged 20 to 49 in England, compared to 244,000 cases in those aged 50 to 79. Breast cancer was the most prevalent among the younger age group, followed by bowel cancer and melanoma skin cancer.

Professor Garcia-Closas highlighted that a significant portion of bowel cancer cases in younger individuals could be attributed to being overweight or obese. The research team emphasized that while body mass index provides valuable insights, a substantial portion of the cancer rate increase remains unexplained, likely due to a combination of multiple factors acting together.

In their call for extensive, long-term research studies, the researchers emphasized the need to identify all biological and environmental factors contributing to the rising cancer rates among young adults. They stressed the urgency of addressing obesity as a public health priority, particularly by reducing obesity rates in children and young people. The study drew on national cancer registry data for England from 2001-2019.
