The closure of the Strait of Hormuz has disrupted fertilizer supplies crucial for cultivating fruits and vegetables, as a considerable portion of the world’s fertilizers typically pass through this route. Staples like pasta, frozen vegetables, chocolate, eggs, and beef have already seen price hikes ranging from 50% to 64%, with olive oil experiencing a substantial 113% increase since the onset of the cost of living crisis.
Climate-affected products like butter, milk, and coffee are contributing to food inflation, rising over four times faster than other goods. Recent inflation figures reveal that grocery prices are presently 3.8% higher than a year ago, with experts cautioning that the Middle East conflict’s impacts are yet to fully manifest on supermarket shelves.
The Food and Drink Federation (FDF) has issued a warning that food inflation could potentially reach 9% by the end of 2026, while businesses have informed the Bank of England that UK food inflation might hit 7%.
