“Thousands of Students Face Repayment Demands Over Loan Error”

Thousands of students are facing demands to repay maintenance loans and childcare grants following a misclassification issue affecting approximately 22,000 individuals enrolled in weekend courses. The Department for Education (DfE) clarified that these payments were erroneously granted due to incorrect course categorization.

In response, the implicated institutions expressed deep concerns over the sudden halt in payments and are contemplating legal recourse against the government. Maintenance loans are intended to cover living expenses and are disbursed directly to students, distinct from tuition loans that cover course fees and are paid to the university. Repayment typically commences after graduation and upon reaching a certain income threshold.

The situation was brought to light by the BBC, involving 15 universities and colleges like London Met, Bath Spa, Leeds Trinity, Southampton Solent, and Oxford Brookes. Efforts are underway to amend courses to include weekday instruction or transfer students to suitable alternatives. Some students have been notified of their eligibility for payments, including those pursuing a bachelor’s degree in acupuncture with practical clinic experience.

The DfE mentioned that the affected weekend courses were often franchised, prompting stricter regulations last year due to concerns about fraudulent practices. Universities UK assured affected students of ongoing support and collaboration with relevant authorities to resolve the matter sensitively.

The institutions jointly expressed alarm over the abrupt discontinuation of maintenance loan payments and are exploring legal options. The Student Loans Company (SLC) emphasized the responsibility of higher education providers to accurately classify courses and align them with student finance regulations.

Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson underscored the commitment to address university franchising discrepancies to protect students and public funds. Urgent support for students facing financial strain is imperative to rectify the situation promptly.
