Canton, a familiar place for me, has secured a spot on Time Out’s rundown of the UK’s trendiest neighborhoods. Claiming the third position, Canton follows Camberwell and Digbeth. Speculating, it likely missed the top spot due to Londoners’ penchant for being at the forefront.
Once seen as merely a stopover for football fans en route to Cardiff City Stadium, Canton has metamorphosed into a vibrant locale. A 30-minute walk from the city center leads to this hub of shops and cafes well worth the excursion. Chapter Arts Centre hosts various events from indie films to vogue balls, accompanied by top-notch cocktails. Additionally, Hard Lines Coffee and Ffloc offer delectable lunch options. Corp Market, formerly a pub, now serves as a diverse traders market housing Head Above The Waves, a skatewear boutique and mental health support center.
Formerly considered less appealing, Canton’s multicultural essence is now drawing in the middle class, escalating property values. The area has evolved significantly, with the emergence of new eateries and cafes, adding a fresh charm to the neighborhood.
Personal ties to Canton run deep for me, being born and raised there. The landscape has transitioned from a solid working-class community to a fusion of old and new, witnessed through the evolving food and beverage scene, while still retaining its authentic essence. Despite the influx of trendy establishments, Canton’s heart beats with nostalgia, echoing the memories of yesteryears.
While Canton’s facelift is undeniable, its core essence remains intact, resonating with a blend of nostalgia and modernity. This blend of old-world charm and contemporary trends sets Canton apart, making it a deserving addition to any list of cool neighborhoods.
