“2025 Sunday Times Young Writer Award Shortlist Revealed”

The essence of British and Irish literary talent is thriving in the hands of innovative writers. The recent unveiling of the shortlist for the 2025 Sunday Times Charlotte Aitken Young Writer of the Year Award sends a powerful message that the upcoming generation is actively engaged in addressing societal and political challenges, rather than being engrossed in digital distractions.

For more than three decades, this award has been a key platform for recognizing influential voices that shape our cultural landscape, with a prestigious list of past winners including renowned authors like Zadie Smith, Sarah Waters, and Caryl Phillips.

Continuing the tradition of identifying exceptional talent, this year’s shortlist is characterized by its bold empathy and unwavering commitment to confronting the harsh realities of our society.

Johanna Thomas-Corr, the chief literary critic for The Times and Sunday Times and head of the 2025 jury, described the selected works as outward-looking and deeply concerned with societal issues and our collective responsibilities.

The judging panel, comprising notable cultural figures such as Caleb Femi, Esther Freud, Graham Norton, Sathnam Sanghera, and Lea Ypi, emphasized the importance of narratives that bridge gaps and challenge established norms, offering a counterbalance to the digital age’s isolating effects.

Competing for the £10,000 prize are four distinct voices bringing diverse perspectives to the forefront. Ben Brooks presents “The Greatest Possible Good,” a humorous exploration of family dynamics and the concept of goodness in a complex contemporary world.

In her debut novel “Saraswati,” Gurnaik Johal leads readers on a global adventure as a protagonist uncovers a hidden river in Northern India, revealing the interconnectedness that transcends borders.

The enigmatic author Liadan Ní Chuinn delves into the enduring scars of post-conflict Northern Ireland in the poignant collection “Every One Still Here,” choosing anonymity to amplify the collective impact of history over individual identities.

Harry Shukman’s “Year of the Rat” stands out for its bold investigative non-fiction narrative, detailing his undercover experiences infiltrating far-right groups in the UK, offering crucial insights in a time of increasing extremism.

The winner’s announcement will take place at the Barbican Centre on Monday, March 23rd, as Booker Prize winner Bernardine Evaristo moderates a panel discussion with the finalists, aiming to make these transformative stories accessible to young audiences through the Young Barbican program.

The ultimate event will unfold the following evening, March 24th, at the Whitechapel Gallery in London’s vibrant East End, where one of these courageous writers will be crowned the champion, securing a place among distinguished literary figures.
