“5 Common Pension Mistakes Costing Thousands”

Pensions can sometimes seem daunting, but having a basic grasp of your retirement fund is crucial. Let’s explore five common errors that many individuals make, potentially siphoning off thousands of pounds from their pensions.

Employers are mandated to automatically enroll eligible employees in a workplace pension plan. This setup entails diverting a portion of your earnings into a pension scheme, with contributions also coming from your employer.

The minimum auto enrollment contribution stands at 8% of qualifying earnings, with employers chipping in a minimum of 3% and employees covering the remaining 5%. Notably, the employee’s contribution is deducted before taxes. For instance, if your monthly contribution amounts to £100, the entire sum goes into your pension.

In contrast, if this amount was included in your regular salary and you are a basic 20% taxpayer, you would have received only £80. Automatic enrollment into a workplace pension scheme occurs if you are between 22 and state pension age and earn a minimum of £10,000 annually.

Keeping track of the number of pensions you’ve held can be challenging, especially after changing jobs frequently. An estimated £31.1 billion lies dormant or unclaimed in pension funds, as per 2024 data from the Pensions Policy Institute (PPI).

To assist in locating lost pensions, the Government provides a free tool called the Pension Tracing Service. By furnishing your prior employment details, the service can furnish you with the contact information of a provider. However, it does not disclose investment details, requiring direct contact with the pension administrator to ascertain fund status.

A new pensions dashboard tool, set to launch soon, will consolidate all pension information for easy access. By October 31, 2026, all schemes must be linked to the dashboard.

Considering your retirement savings adequacy, Pensions UK predicts that approximately 82% of the UK workforce will achieve at least the minimum standard of living in retirement, but only 23% will reach a moderate standard, with less than 10% enjoying a comfortable lifestyle.

The Pensions and Lifetime Savings Association (PLSA) has updated figures on the financial requirements for minimum, moderate, and comfortable retirements. The annual cost for a minimum standard of living in retirement is £13,900 for a single person and £22,500 for a couple.

For a moderate lifestyle, a single individual would need £32,700 annually, while a couple would require £45,400. A comfortable retirement would demand £45,400 per year for a single person and £62,700 for a two-person household.

Most private and workplace pensions operate independently from your will. This setup could potentially lead to your retirement savings going to unintended recipients if your documents are not kept current.

An expression of wish form informs your pension provider of your desired recipient for your pension savings in case of your demise before retirement. Though not legally binding, this form guides your provider in determining the beneficiary. You can designate one or multiple individuals and specify the percentage split.

Each pension provider offers its expression of wish form. Most individuals have an annual allowance of £60,000 for pension contributions before incurring taxes. However, this limit may be lower for high-income earners or those who have accessed their pension pot flexibly.

Individuals with a “threshold income” surpassing £200,000 and an “adjusted income” exceeding £260,000 usually adhere to a tapered annual allowance.
