“UK Broadband Study Reveals Evening Slowdown Hotspots”

Millions of broadband users in the UK are familiar with the significant issue of online congestion, particularly during peak hours in the evening. This congestion occurs when multiple users are simultaneously engaged in activities like streaming, downloading, and video calls, leading to slower speeds and frustrating experiences for users.

A recent study conducted by Broadband Genie has revealed the areas in the UK most impacted by peak-time slowdowns, with Wigan (WN1) ranking at the top of the list. The report indicates that broadband users in Wigan witness a substantial decrease in average download speeds from 167Mbps during off-peak hours to only 75Mbps in the evening, representing a 55% drop in speed.

Other regions heavily affected by evening congestion include Galashiels (TD1), Harrogate (HG1), Exeter (EX1), and Rochester (ME1). These areas experience varying degrees of speed reduction during peak hours, highlighting the challenges faced by users in maintaining consistent internet performance throughout the day.

Interestingly, not all parts of the UK suffer from evening slowdowns; some areas even see an improvement in internet speeds during peak times. Newport emerged as the top-performing location in the study, followed by Oxford, Glasgow, Blackburn, and Cambridge.

Broadband Genie emphasized the similarity between internet networks and congested roads, noting that congestion can impact broadband performance. The analysis of 144,509 broadband speed tests provided insights into the locations where broadband performance is most affected during peak hours, with Wigan residents experiencing the largest speed drop.

The study also shed light on regional differences across the UK, with Scotland leading in overall broadband performance improvements during the evening. Conversely, the South West experienced a notable decline in average speeds during peak periods compared to daytime performance.

Broadband experts suggest several measures to enhance home internet connections, such as optimizing router placement and rebooting routers periodically to address network issues. These recommendations can help users mitigate the effects of evening congestion and maintain a more reliable internet experience.
