Berlin’s famous techno clubs have long been mysterious in their selection process for entry, but a recent study aimed to demystify this process. Published in the Journal of Marketing by researchers from the University of Bath, King’s College London, and Freie Universität Berlin, the study revealed that door ‘selectors’ seek individuals who both ‘fit in’ and ‘stand out’ to enhance the club experience.
However, Berlin-based writer and musicologist Dr. Liam Cagney believes the study only scratches the surface. Cagney suggests that Berlin’s club culture blurs the line between public and private spaces, making the door selection criteria more of an art form.
Cagney compares door selectors to hosts of a party, extending invitations for people to enter their ‘house’ in a unique way. He emphasizes that Berlin’s club heritage fosters a space for reimagining social interactions, which can confuse club tourists expecting easy entry.
Despite the business aspect of leveraging the experience economy, Cagney acknowledges that clubs capitalize on people’s curiosity. He likens the exclusivity of club entry to a metaphorical Berlin Wall, suggesting that the allure of secrecy sparks desire among potential club-goers.
The rise of ‘techno tourists’ attracted by platforms like TikTok has led to an influx of visitors attempting to access exclusive clubs. Online discussions on platforms like Reddit offer advice on behavior and attire to increase chances of entry into renowned venues such as Berghain and Tresor.
Cagney notes that social media-driven tourists bring a consumerist attitude to the scene, potentially disrupting the experience for regular patrons. He observes newcomers behaving like spectators rather than participants, impacting the club’s ambiance.
To maintain the club’s atmosphere for regulars, Cagney believes bouncers play a crucial role. He recounts instances where bouncers creatively manage entry, such as rejecting individuals based on unconventional criteria like attire color, adding an element of unpredictability to the selection process.
Despite occasional disappointments at the door, Cagney views the current selection system as the most viable option, even with occasional misjudgments by the door staff.
Cagney emphasizes the importance of reframing Berlin’s techno clubs as personal gatherings rather than mere entertainment venues. He highlights that while the exclusivity may seem daunting, becoming an ‘insider’ can demystify the experience and enhance one’s understanding of the club culture.
Unpredictability remains a key element in club entry, as Cagney recalls instances where bouncers made arbitrary decisions, like basing entry on footwear, to maintain a sense of intrigue and amusement among themselves.
In October 2025, Cagney will release his book, “Berghain Nights,” exploring Berlin’s club scene through a blend of essay and memoir, featuring interviews with prominent electronic dance music artists and key figures in Berlin’s nightlife.
