“Stellantis Considers Closure, Sale of Brampton Assembly Plant”

Stellantis is reportedly contemplating the potential closure and sale of the Brampton Assembly Plant, as disclosed to the Unifor union by a national union representative. While Stellantis has not issued a formal written notice of closure, it is obligated under the collective agreement to provide at least one year’s notice to the union in such instances. The company has hinted at engaging in discussions with another entity regarding the plant’s potential sale, much to the disappointment of the union.

Unifor President Lana Payne expressed dismay, labeling the situation as a significant blow to the union and its devoted members who have dedicated their efforts to the plant. Stellantis, in response, stated its focus on engaging in collective bargaining and finding a sustainable manufacturing solution for the Brampton Assembly.

The union highlighted that the Brampton plant was initially designated for Jeep Compass production but faced setbacks leading to potential relocation of production to the U.S., jeopardizing the plant’s future and the high-paying union jobs it sustains. Payne emphasized the union’s intention to address these concerns during upcoming contract negotiations with Stellantis.

Additionally, the union reiterated its call for government intervention to safeguard Canada’s auto manufacturing sector, emphasizing the pivotal role the Brampton Assembly plant plays in the community and economy. As Unifor navigates labor negotiations with major automakers, including General Motors and Stellantis, efforts are underway to protect the plant’s workforce and secure long-term investment in Canadian manufacturing.

Unifor Local 1285 President Vito Beato affirmed the union’s commitment to defending the Brampton plant’s workforce and hinted at a proactive stance during bargaining discussions to ensure a viable path forward for the plant. Despite the current idle status of the plant, workers are receiving income support, reflecting the union’s dedication to their well-being during this uncertain period. The City of Brampton also stands in solidarity with Unifor and the plant workers, striving to uphold automotive production and facilitate workers’ return to the plant.

Government officials have been actively engaged in discussions to safeguard the Brampton plant’s operations, protect jobs, and promote continued investment in Canadian manufacturing. The collective efforts of various stakeholders aim to secure a sustainable future for the Brampton Assembly Plant and its workforce.
