Heineken has announced a substantial investment of over £44 million in numerous pubs across the UK. The Dutch brewing company is set to enhance 647 pubs within its 2,350-strong Star Pubs estate this year. Among these, 108 pubs will undergo complete renovations, each costing £145,000 or more, leading to the creation of approximately 850 jobs.
The refurbishment program will focus on revamping various areas within the pubs to cater to drinking, dining, and sports or entertainment needs, with a particular emphasis on sports-themed venues in anticipation of the upcoming World Cup. Additionally, Heineken plans to introduce a new contemporary pub model targeted at attracting a younger adult demographic, offering a transition from daytime coffee and workspace to evening entertainment such as DJs, open-mic sessions, and live music.
Most of the pubs included in the initiative are owned by Heineken but are operated independently by licensees. Since 2018, Heineken has injected a total of £328 million into British pubs, with ongoing work in 52 locations, including the reopening of eight previously closed establishments.
This investment initiative comes at a crucial time for the pub sector, facing challenges from escalating costs, reduced consumer spending power, and increased National Insurance employer contributions. To alleviate some financial pressures, pubs have received additional business rates support from the Government.
Lawson Mountstevens, Managing Director of Star Pubs, has called on the Government to ease the tax burden on pubs. He emphasized the importance of investments in pubs to maintain their appeal as social hubs and generate revenue to offset the rising operational costs. Mountstevens highlighted the necessity for comprehensive reform of business rates and reduced taxation, including VAT and beer duty, to support the industry.
The investment by Heineken is expected to create flexible job opportunities across communities in the UK, providing valuable work experience for many young individuals.
