In 2012, at a gaming convention dinner, a board game designer challenged mathematician Eric Harshbarger to create dice that would determine the starting player without a possibility of a tie. Harshbarger, a senior lecturer at Auburn University in Alabama, embraced the challenge as it intrigued his mathematical expertise.
After years of dedication, Harshbarger and his team developed a set of Go First Dice for five players, ensuring a fair decision on the starting player with a single roll. A breakthrough came when a Canadian software engineer, Paul Meyer, successfully devised a set of five 60-sided dice to solve the challenge.
