“Expert Advice: Should You Sleep with a Fan On?”

The UK is gearing up for a heatwave this week, with the upcoming Bank Holiday potentially marking the hottest day of the year as temperatures are expected to reach 30C.

As the city and the rest of the nation prepare for a prolonged period of warm weather, the age-old debate of whether to leave a fan running overnight resurfaces. Six health experts were consulted to determine if it is better to keep the fan on or off, and they generally agreed that having a fan running can improve sleeping conditions.

Dr. Luke Powles, Clinical Director at Bupa Health Clinics, mentioned that sleeping with a fan on can offer relief from the heat, but cautioned that prolonged use may lead to dry skin, nose, or worsened allergies. Adjusting the fan’s settings or using it for shorter durations was recommended for those experiencing discomfort.

Chris Tattersall, the managing director of Woolroom, emphasized the importance of airflow through the bedroom during a heatwave, suggesting adjustments for ceiling fans to circulate air effectively for better sleep quality.

Superdrug’s Pharmacy Director Craig Watt supported the idea of keeping the fan running for comfort during a heatwave but warned about potential side effects like dryness, especially for allergy sufferers. Staying hydrated and using saline sprays were suggested remedies.

The Sleep Geek James Wilson, in collaboration with Bensons, endorsed the use of a cooling fan in the bedroom for improved comfort during hot nights, emphasizing proper fan positioning and noise tolerance.

Dr. Deborah Lee from the Dr Fox Online Pharmacy highlighted the benefits of using a fan overnight to create a cooling breeze that aids in lowering body temperature, suggesting placing a bowl of ice in front of the fan for added cooling.

Matt Ladell, a cooling expert at Duux, recommended using the fan to cool the room and aid in falling asleep rather than keeping it on throughout the night. Gentle airflow positioning was advised to prevent discomfort.

Dr. Punam Krishan, an NHS GP, explained that while a fan doesn’t lower room temperature, it helps in efficient sweat evaporation, leading to improved comfort during warm weather. Additional cooling measures may be necessary during extreme heat conditions.

While using a fan overnight is generally safe, precautions should be taken to prevent dehydration and discomfort. Positioning the fan correctly, staying hydrated, and considering individual allergies are essential factors to bear in mind.

It is crucial to note that prolonged use of a fan can lead to skin dryness, and individuals with allergies should be cautious as fans can circulate allergens in the bedroom.
