It has been nearly a quarter of a century since I experienced my first cruise, a time when my responsibilities at home were not as demanding as they are now with children and work. I envisioned my latest cruise to mainly involve relaxation on deck, enjoying the sun, and savoring cocktails during a child-free seven-day voyage.
Accompanied by my friend Paul, who was new to cruising, we selected a week-long journey on the P&O Cruises ship Azura, exploring the Canary Islands and Madeira. The allure of escaping the dreary winter weather of Northern England for some sunny days at sea, starting from Tenerife and visiting Madeira, Gran Canaria, and Lanzarote before returning to Tenerife, was irresistible.
As the departure date drew near and we perused the available excursions, we discovered that our trip would involve more than just leisurely activities. Planning ahead proved crucial for making the most of our cruise experience, especially when exploring the volcanic islands and vibrant towns. Here are five recommendations based on our adventures around the Canary Islands and Madeira.
During a bus tour through the park, we marveled at the striking landscape sculpted by molten lava rock. Our journey took us up and down winding roads, through lava fields, and eventually to a visitor center where we interacted with samples of the fiery rock, observed steam geysers erupting, and saw the BBQ area where chickens were cooked.
Onboard Azura, the fully-equipped gym offered cardio machines and weights for a quick workout, followed by relaxation in the private adults-only pool for a refreshing swim.
Indoors, the spa featured various treatment areas, a steam room, and a sauna. I indulged in a deep tissue massage, which proved to be incredibly therapeutic and rejuvenating.
The spa also boasted a relaxation room and an exclusive private area upstairs with sun loungers and a seating section, ideal for unwinding after island explorations.
For those interested in booking a similar holiday, prices for the Spain, Portugal & Canary Islands cruise (N617) start at £1,299 per person for a 14-night roundtrip from Southampton on 18 July aboard Ventura, based on double occupancy in an inside cabin. Reservations can be made on the pocruises.com website.
