Fashion accessories retailer Claires has shuttered its 154 stores in the UK and Ireland, resulting in approximately 1,300 job losses as confirmed by administrators.
Kroll administrators disclosed that all remaining Claires stores have halted operations, and employees have been formally informed about their redundancies. However, concession outlets and European branches are currently unaffected and will remain operational.
In an official statement, Kroll stated, “Effective April 27th, all standalone Claires stores in the UK and Ireland have ceased operations. Staff members have been notified of their redundancy. We are aware that a potential buyer is in talks with several landlords to secure new leases for some of the locations.”
Last year, Mayfair financiers Modella Capital, known for acquiring WH Smith’s high street sector, took control of 156 Claires stores in the UK and Ireland. The acquisition aimed to rescue over 1,000 jobs in the region, although it was acknowledged that some store closures and job losses were expected.
Unfortunately, in January of this year, the UK segment of Claires collapsed into administration. Modella Capital previously attributed this downturn to challenging retail conditions exacerbated by government policies, significantly impacting British retailers like Claires.
Concerns are also mounting for TJ Jones, the rebranded WH Smith high street business, amidst rumors of an imminent restructuring strategy that may involve substantial store closures.
Notably, the closure of the 154 Claires stores does not impact the brand’s 356 concessions, which include locations within Asda stores and its corporate headquarters.
Fashion expert Priya Raj highlighted a shift away from the traditional bright and quirky jewelry that Claires was renowned for, indicating that modern teens are more influenced by social media trends rather than local retail options.
Recent reports have indicated the closure of multiple Claires stores in various locations like Cheshire Oaks, Sutton Coldfield, Stockport, Watford, and Bangor.
