Barry and Eddie Hearn have exceeded the £1 billion mark with their sports media empire. The dynamic father and son team are the owners of Matchroom Sports, a renowned entity involved in boxing, snooker, and darts.
Barry’s journey began in the 1970s in snooker, where he managed the six-time world champion Steve Davis. In 1982, the 77-year-old established Matchroom, paving the way for his son Eddie, 46, to contribute significantly to the empire’s growth, particularly in the realm of boxing, where Eddie has also garnered fame.
Matchroom has managed renowned athletes such as Frank Bruno, Chris Eubank Sr, and Lennox Lewis, and is currently recognized for its association with Anthony Joshua. Barry serves as the chairman of the Professional Darts Corporation, playing a pivotal role in the resurgence of darts’ popularity. Additionally, he has had a substantial impact on the snooker scene after acquiring the World Snooker Tour in 2010.
Their collective efforts have translated into immense wealth, positioning them as the third wealthiest figures in UK sports according to The Sunday Times rich list, with a combined fortune of £1.035 billion. They trail behind only F1 tycoon Bernie Ecclestone (£2bn) and the duo of David and Victoria Beckham (£1.185bn).
Surpassing F1 driver Sir Lewis Hamilton, who holds the fifth spot with £435m, are Matchroom’s most prominent client, Anthony Joshua, ranked eighth with an estimated £240m, ahead of boxer Tyson Fury in ninth with £162m. England football captain Harry Kane and tennis legend Sir Andy Murray jointly hold the tenth position with £110m each.
Although Barry laid the foundation for Matchroom, Eddie’s instrumental role in expanding the empire cannot be overlooked. In a 2020 piece for the Big Issue, Eddie acknowledged the influence of being Barry’s son on his drive for success, emphasizing his determination to surpass his father’s accomplishments and elevate the business to new heights.
