“PEI Corn Season Rebounds as Quebec’s Cheaper Crop Arrives”

After experiencing a chilly spring that hindered growth, the corn season in Prince Edward Island is now making up for lost time just as Quebec’s cheaper corn hits the shelves. Matthew Compton, the owner of Compton’s Farm Market in Summerside, mentioned that May and June were unusually cold, delaying the sweet corn harvest commencement but not affecting his planting quantities.

According to Compton, corn thrives in warm soil and temperatures, so he utilized clear, biodegradable plastic to expedite the growth process by creating a greenhouse effect. As a result, some of his crop was ready for sale earlier this week, boasting exceptional quality and flavor enhanced by recent rain and heat.

Although Compton’s main sweet corn crop is slightly lagging, he emphasized the importance of timing due to peak demand in midsummer when tourists flock to the island and families stock up for activities like campfires and barbecues. Conversely, Mark Verleun of Keddy’s Corn in Montague faced similar challenges with a cold and wet spring but noted a positive turn in weather conditions by early July.

Both farmers are closely monitoring the corn surplus in Quebec, where an excess of sweet corn has led to reduced prices for consumers. This abundance has influenced local prices in Prince Edward Island, with Compton highlighting the competitive pressure imposed by Quebec’s market. Despite this, both Compton and Verleun have maintained their prices steady to provide affordable options for customers without compromising quality.

Recognizing the allure of cheaper corn from Quebec, Compton encourages consumers to support local farmers by paying a slightly higher price, as this investment directly benefits the local economy. Verleun echoes this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of sustainability and community support in maintaining the local farming industry.

In conclusion, the corn season in Prince Edward Island is gradually gaining momentum despite initial setbacks, with farmers adapting to market dynamics and consumer preferences to ensure a successful harvest.
