Joshua Kutryk is set to embark on a space mission to the International Space Station (ISS) for approximately six months. He expressed his excitement during a recent press call, emphasizing his gratitude for the opportunity to represent Canada in space. Kutryk, an accomplished engineer, fighter pilot, and test pilot from Fort Saskatchewan, Alta., was selected by the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) in 2017.
Originally slated to launch on Boeing’s CST-100 Starliner, Kutryk will now be riding on SpaceX’s Crew Dragon due to delays with Boeing’s mission. The launch date was rescheduled from September 12 to October 1 following a minor issue with the spacecraft. Kutryk, confident in the readiness of the vehicle, eagerly awaits the upcoming launch.
In preparation for his journey, Kutryk will be bringing various items from Canadian organizations and personal mementos, including Canadian flags. Notably, he will carry an old pocket watch that holds sentimental value as it traveled with his family from Ukraine to Canada. Although the watch preceded him to the ISS on an earlier supply launch, Kutryk finds its presence in space meaningful, symbolizing the transformative power of exploration.
During his mission, Kutryk plans to conduct experiments aboard the ISS, some of which are Canadian initiatives. Accompanied by NASA astronauts Jessica Watkins and Luke Delaney, as well as Russian cosmonaut Sergey Teteriatnikov, Kutryk looks forward to contributing to scientific research and collaboration in space.
Reflecting on the mission’s significance, Kutryk highlighted the unifying nature of space exploration, transcending global challenges and showcasing the potential for international cooperation. He believes that venturing into space with a diverse team underscores the positive impact of collective efforts toward a shared future.
As Kutryk anticipates the launch, he eagerly awaits the opportunity to gaze out of the spacecraft’s windows and marvel at the Earth below, a simple yet profound experience that resonates with his lifelong dream of space exploration.
