Tommy John, a legendary figure in baseball who achieved 288 victories in a remarkable 26-year professional career and was renowned for being the first player to make a successful comeback after undergoing a groundbreaking elbow surgery that later bore his name, has passed away at the age of 83.

The news of his death was confirmed by his agent, Mike Maguire, who stated that John passed away at his residence in Bradenton, Florida, on Saturday evening while under hospice care.

The New York Yankees paid tribute to John by releasing a social media post on August 8 where he expressed his gratitude to his fans and friends, bidding farewell and stating that he would always cherish the memories.

During his illustrious career spanning from 1963 to 1989, John, a four-time All-Star, amassed a record of 288-231 with an impressive 3.34 ERA while playing for various teams including Cleveland, the Chicago White Sox, the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Yankees, the California Angels, and the Oakland Athletics.

Recognizing his significant contributions to the sport, Stan Kasten, the President and CEO of the Dodgers, praised John as an outstanding pitcher whose pioneering decision to undergo the groundbreaking surgery had a lasting impact on the baseball community.

The left-handed pitcher made history in 1974 when he underwent a revolutionary surgery performed by Dr. Frank Jobe, where the damaged ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow was replaced with a tendon from his right forearm. This procedure, known as Tommy John surgery, has since become a game-changer in baseball, benefiting numerous players including renowned stars like Shohei Ohtani, Justin Verlander, and Bryce Harper.

Despite facing initial skepticism, John’s successful recovery and subsequent achievements after the surgery solidified his status as a baseball legend. The surgery not only extended his career but also paved the way for countless athletes to overcome similar injuries and continue playing at a high level.

Born on May 22, 1943, in Terre Haute, Indiana, John excelled in both baseball and basketball during his youth. He chose a career in baseball, eventually making his mark as a respected and dedicated player known for his unwavering competitiveness and sportsmanship.

John’s legacy extends far beyond his on-field accomplishments, as he left a lasting impact on the game and inspired generations of players with his resilience and determination. His invaluable contributions to the sport will be remembered and celebrated for years to come.
