Canadian Banking Giants Stay Bullish Amid Trade War Turbulence

Three major Canadian banks expressed positive outlooks for the economy despite concerns from numerous smaller businesses dealing with the repercussions of a full-scale trade war with the United States. Royal Bank of Canada, Toronto-Dominion Bank, and CIBC released their financial results on Thursday morning on the Toronto Stock Exchange. These banking giants collectively hold assets totaling up to $6 trillion, giving them a unique perspective on the impact of tariffs with their extensive consumer and business loan portfolios in both Canada and the U.S.

RBC CEO Dave McKay highlighted the resilience of the Canadian economy, citing improvements in employment and GDP in the second quarter as reasons for a cautiously optimistic view on future expansion. TD Bank’s CEO Raymond Chun referred to a potential “super cycle” of investment in Canada, driven by government spending in infrastructure and defense projects. CIBC’s CEO Harry Culham expressed measured confidence for the latter part of 2026, emphasizing the need to monitor evolving trade conditions and labor market trends.

A study by Oxford Economics for the Canadian American Business Council warned of potential job losses if the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) were to be scrapped. BMO Capital Markets projected a slight decrease in Canadian growth due to the latest round of U.S. tariffs, primarily impacting business confidence and investment. National Bank’s CEO Laurent Ferreira commended the government’s investment initiatives and aid packages to support businesses affected by tariffs, highlighting key projects like the icebreaker ship contract in Quebec.

Amidst the trade tensions, the CEOs of Bank of Montreal and Scotiabank reassured that the Canada-U.S. trade conflict is manageable. Canadian bank stocks have remained strong on the Toronto Stock Exchange, with the BMO Equal Weight Banks Index ETF surging nearly 50% in the past year. The positive sentiment from the major banks reflects their confidence in the Canadian economy’s ability to weather the challenges posed by the ongoing trade disputes.
