An overlooked clash on Canadian land just a year prior to Confederation may not resonate widely among Canadians outside Fort Erie, Ont., but it holds significance in various historical aspects. The Battle of Ridgeway, also known as Limestone Ridge, in 1866 marked the first instance of Canadian troops under Canadian leadership engaging in combat. This event also served as the inspiration for Decoration Day, an antecedent to Remembrance Day still observed in some regions annually.
Despite its historical importance, the nine soldiers who perished in the battle are notably absent from the Books of Remembrance, a collection on Parliament Hill commemorating fallen Canadian soldiers. A new petition, to be presented in the House of Commons, aims to include these nine individuals and the numerous others who lost their lives following the battle on this list.
Conservative MP Fred Davies, representing the Niagara South riding encompassing Fort Erie, where the battle occurred, emphasized the significance of recognizing those who sacrificed their lives in defense of Canada. The Battle of Ridgeway saw inexperienced Canadian volunteers confronting Fenian raiders, predominantly American Civil War veterans affiliated with the Fenian Brotherhood, an Irish American group advocating for Irish independence from British rule through incursions into British North America.
Despite facing challenges such as limited supplies and inadequate preparation, the Canadian forces engaged the invaders, leading to a tactical retreat following a Fenian bayonet charge. While the battle resulted in a defeat for the Canadians, it effectively halted the Fenian campaign, forcing the raiders to retreat back to the U.S. side of the Niagara River.
Although the Battle of Ridgeway ended in a battlefield loss, its significance lies in the valor and dedication of those who fought to protect Canada against external threats. A memorial honoring the nine fallen soldiers was erected in 2016, yet efforts to have their names added to the Books of Remembrance have been unsuccessful so far.
This battle, preceding the establishment of Canada as a nation, is considered instrumental in shaping Canadian identity and unity.
