Last year, during riots, ordinary Belfast citizens united to protect mosques from unruly individuals targeting them based on ethnicity.
Unfortunately, on June 8th, a distressing incident unfolded when a man, identified as Stephen Oglivie, was brutally stabbed by a Sudanese individual in Belfast. Shocking footage of the attack circulated widely on social media.
The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) swiftly responded to the incident on Kinnaird Avenue, resulting in the victim being hospitalized and another man arrested in connection with the crime. Sadly, the victim reportedly lost his left eye due to the attack.
Amidst the chaos, bystanders courageously intervened with a hurley stick, earning praise from law enforcement and politicians for their selfless actions.
Following the incident, online platforms witnessed a surge in racist rhetoric, with right-wing voices advocating for the expulsion of people of color. Such hateful sentiments were widely shared and endorsed, sparking further tension.
