Sarajevo, a city often overlooked yet steeped in history and surrounded by stunning natural beauty, has been named Europe’s top-value destination for a short getaway.
Despite its smaller population compared to Reading and its inland location, Sarajevo offers a rich cultural experience ideal for a summer escape, all at an incredibly affordable price point.
As per Post Office Money’s City Cost Barometer 2026, Sarajevo emerged as the most budget-friendly among 50 European cities analyzed. The study factored in costs like accommodation, dining out, transportation, and sightseeing activities, revealing that a complete travel experience in Sarajevo could be enjoyed for just £248, significantly lower than other European destinations.
Local guide Nermin Numic highlighted the city’s affordability, noting that indulging in local delicacies like cevapi or Bosanski Lonac can cost as little as £5. Even a more upscale dining experience would only set you back around £15 per person. Accommodation options range from budget-friendly rooms for under £50 to luxurious hotels and Airbnbs for approximately £150.
Sarajevo’s unique blend of cultures and architectural influences, from Ottoman to Austro-Hungarian, creates a captivating tapestry of history and tradition. Nestled amidst mountains that once hosted the Winter Olympics, the city offers opportunities for skiing in winter and hiking in summer, all within easy reach.
The city’s diverse heritage, with mosques, churches, and synagogues coexisting harmoniously, has earned it the nickname “Little Jerusalem.” Sarajevo’s 13 bridges serve as symbols of unity, including the iconic Latin Bridge, where the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand occurred, sparking World War I.
Unlike the bustling city of Mostar, Sarajevo maintains a more serene atmosphere, except during August when the diaspora returns and the renowned film festival brings added vibrancy to the capital.
With affordable flights available from London Stansted and Luton, Sarajevo is easily accessible for budget-conscious travelers seeking a blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. The city’s charm and value make it a top choice for those looking to explore Eastern Europe without breaking the bank.
