The UK’s priciest weekend getaway location has been identified, and it might not be the one you expect. London is renowned for its high costs, spanning from expensive hotels and entertainment to dining out and pub drinks. Research by Post Office Travel Money revealed that the average cost could reach £527.50 for a two-night stay in the capital over the weekend.
To assist Brits in maximizing their budget, the Post Office disclosed the 50 most economical European cities in their ‘City Costs Barometer 2026’. Sarajevo in Bosnia and Herzegovina emerged as the most budget-friendly destination for a two-night stay for two, followed by Bucharest in Romania and Tirana in Albania.
UK destinations didn’t make it to the top 20, with Cardiff in Wales ranking 21st with a total cost of £377.64, while London secured the 34th spot. Surprisingly, the study also unveiled the UK’s costliest city for a two-night weekend escape, which was nearly double the expense of Cardiff and almost £150 more than London.
Edinburgh in Scotland, renowned for its iconic castle, volcanic landscapes, historic sites, and charming streets, was identified as the priciest UK city for a two-night break. Ranked at 48 on the list, the average cost for a trip to Edinburgh for two was £668.10, with expenses such as coffee, beer, wine, meals, and tours adding up.
Accommodation notably contributed to the elevated costs, with an average of £462 required for a two-night stay for two at a three-star hotel in Edinburgh. For those seeking savings while planning a staycation, Cardiff emerged as the most affordable UK destination for a weekend retreat.
Laura Plunkett, head of Travel Money at Post Office, highlighted the value offered by many European cities amid concerns about rising costs abroad. With a relatively strong sterling, she advised holidaymakers to research before booking to maximize their spending power, especially for short breaks.
