“Trump to Meet Xi in Beijing Amid Iran Diplomacy”

President Donald Trump is scheduled to depart for Beijing today, joined by a group of influential American business leaders, in a crucial diplomatic effort amid uncertainties surrounding the Iran peace deal. The visit is poised to address key issues such as America’s involvement in the Middle East, which could impact discussions on business ties with China. This three-day trip marks Trump’s initial visit to China during his second term and the first by a sitting US president in nearly ten years. Trump has expressed optimism about his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, downplaying existing tensions between the nations.

The focal point of the discussions is expected to be trade as both Washington and Beijing strive to maintain a fragile truce after last year’s intense tariff disputes. The trade conflict ensued following Trump’s implementation of extensive import duties globally in April 2025, leading to retaliatory tariffs from China exceeding 100 percent on both sides. While these measures were temporarily halted after Trump’s recent in-person meeting with Xi in South Korea, trade, technology, and artificial intelligence remain contentious issues.

A significant shadow over the summit is the ongoing Iran conflict, with China standing as one of Iran’s closest allies and biggest trading partners. The US has been actively engaged in military actions against Iran, adding pressure on Beijing to leverage its influence with Tehran to facilitate negotiations with Washington to resolve the conflict.

The presence of top American business and technology leaders on the trip underscores the commercial significance of the visit. Notable executives joining Trump include Tim Cook from Apple, Elon Musk from Tesla and SpaceX, Larry Fink from BlackRock, Kelly Ortberg from Boeing, and David Solomon from Goldman Sachs, among others. This delegation showcases the expansive US commercial interests linked to China across various sectors like aviation, banking, semiconductors, social media, and manufacturing.

The absence of Jensen Huang from the delegation, a key player in the US-China semiconductor and AI technology battle, has drawn attention. The visit is seen as a critical diplomatic challenge for both leaders amid persisting strained relations between the world’s largest economies, even with the temporary tariff truce in place.

Expectations are high that discussions will be heavily influenced by the Iran conflict, which previously caused delays in arranging the Trump-Xi meeting. Washington is counting on Beijing’s economic ties with Tehran to play a pivotal role in any prospective diplomatic resolution. Meanwhile, China aims to avoid disruptions to global trade routes and energy supplies as the Iran conflict continues to impact markets worldwide.
