A recent survey conducted by Deltapoll for the Mirror revealed that a majority of British citizens would support reversing Brexit if given the opportunity in a new referendum. Nearly 59% of respondents expressed their willingness to re-join the European Union.
The survey results coincide with efforts by Keir Starmer to strengthen ties with Brussels. Prime Minister Boris Johnson emphasized the importance of addressing tensions with the White House under Donald Trump’s administration, as negotiations commenced to participate in the EU’s £78 billion loan program for Ukraine.
President Trump’s recent actions, including threats to withdraw from NATO and reduce troop presence in Germany, have raised concerns among European leaders. Starmer’s push to engage in the EU’s loan scheme follows a shift in the UK government’s approach to rebuilding relations with the EU post-Brexit.
During a European Political Summit, Johnson highlighted the need for European countries to enhance their defense and security commitments. Starmer echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the urgency of stepping up efforts in defense and security, particularly in light of ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and Iran.
If the UK successfully joins the EU’s loan scheme, it would collaborate with the EU to provide essential equipment to Kyiv, offering British firms opportunities to bid for significant defense contracts. Starmer emphasized the benefits of closer ties with Europe, citing job creation and overall advantages for the UK outweighing the associated costs.
On a separate note, the EU is anticipated to request an annual contribution of £1 billion from Britain for continued access to the single market, according to reports from the Times. The survey conducted by Deltapoll included 3,353 British adults and was conducted online between April 26th and May 1st, 2026, with weighted data to ensure representation of the British adult population as a whole.
