“Deadly Hantavirus Outbreak on Luxury Cruise Ship”

Passengers aboard a cruise ship in the midst of a suspected Hantavirus outbreak were required to remain on the vessel for 13 days following the first reported death. The authorities acted swiftly to contain the potential spread of this rare rodent-borne illness, which can be transmitted to humans through contact with infected rodents’ urine, feces, or saliva. Approximately 150 individuals on the MV Hondius cruise ship were instructed to stay onboard while it sailed in West African waters.

The World Health Organization disclosed that the number of cases had increased to seven, with three fatalities among passengers on the luxury Dutch liner. Oceanwide Expeditions, the cruise operator, detailed a timeline of the events and noted that the deceased individual’s body had been retained on the ship for 13 days.

A 70-year-old Dutch male passenger exhibited symptoms such as fever, headache, and mild diarrhea on April 6, progressing to respiratory distress and eventual death on April 11. His body remained onboard the ship, which departed from Argentina, until it was disembarked on St Helena on April 24. Subsequently, his 69-year-old wife disembarked as well, having experienced gastrointestinal issues during the voyage.

Tragically, the woman’s health deteriorated during a flight to Johannesburg, leading to her passing on April 26. Another passenger, a 69-year-old British man, fell seriously ill during the cruise and was evacuated for medical treatment in South Africa, where he remains in critical condition. The cruise operator confirmed that this passenger had tested positive for a variant of Hantavirus after presenting symptoms of shortness of breath and pneumonia to onboard medical staff.

A fourth individual, an adult female, displayed pneumonia symptoms and passed away on May 2, with the exact cause of death still under investigation. Oceanwide Expeditions assured that a thorough inquiry into the deaths and cases is ongoing, including any potential links between them.

While approximately 150 passengers and crew members are still onboard, the operator emphasized the implementation of stringent precautionary measures, including isolation protocols, hygiene practices, and medical surveillance. All passengers have been informed and are receiving necessary support. Oceanwide Expeditions stated that it is closely liaising with those directly impacted and their families, extending assistance wherever possible. Moreover, the operator confirmed that 19 passengers and 4 crew members on the MV Hondius were British nationals.
