“Live Nation’s Ticketing Dominance Sparks Competition Concerns”

A recent study on the live music sector has urged an examination of potential market dominance by Live Nation, a major ticketing company. According to the Business and Trade Committee, Live Nation had direct control over 58% of the 23.1 million primary tickets sold last year. The committee also highlighted that this control rose to 66% when taking into account sales managed by its affiliated companies. Additionally, concerns were raised about the low adoption rate of an industry-led levy on arena and stadium tickets to support grassroots initiatives.

Responding to the report, Live Nation, the parent company of Ticketmaster, dismissed the findings, stating that the report relied on inaccurate data and unfounded conclusions. The committee expressed unease over the anonymity of many contributors to the report and has called on the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) to launch a new investigation. This call comes after a previous CMA inquiry into Ticketmaster’s sale of Oasis tickets in 2024, which revealed discrepancies in ticket pricing disclosure.

Committee chair Liam Byrne emphasized the need for a thorough market investigation by the CMA to ensure fairness for consumers, artists, and independent businesses in the live music industry. He underscored the importance of a competitive landscape that benefits all stakeholders in the sector. Government officials reiterated the requirement for transparency in ticket pricing and highlighted strengthened measures to enforce competition and consumer laws.

In response, a CMA spokesperson mentioned that they would carefully review the committee’s report and relevant developments to determine their next steps, including potential market investigations. Live Nation UK defended its position, emphasizing its competitive efforts in securing tours, venues, and artists in a highly competitive environment. The company expressed willingness to engage in discussions that enhance the industry but stressed the importance of evidence-based discussions rather than unfounded allegations.

The ongoing dialogue between industry stakeholders and regulatory bodies underscores the significance of fair competition practices in the live music sector.
