The latest promotional move by Reform has backfired, causing a significant crisis for Nigel Farage. The party faced criticism for organizing a controversial competition offering free energy bills for a year to one lucky winner and their entire street. June, a dedicated Reform supporter from Wigan, was declared the winner, but neighbors on her street allege they have not received any benefits.
Nigel Farage shared a celebratory video on social media, presenting flowers to June and her spouse while the party’s treasury representative, Robert Jenrick, displayed a large ceremonial check. Concerns arose when social media users noticed a photo of Mr. Farage with the winning couple at a 2019 Brexit event, fueling suspicions of pre-knowledge. The winning pair were described as loyal party members in a subsequent post on a local Reform UK page.
Residents on St Malo Road in Wigan claim they have been left out of the prize distribution, despite assurances that every household would receive instructions on how to claim their reward. Angie Ecclestone expressed disappointment at not receiving her winnings and highlighted the exclusion of her neighbors, emphasizing the original promise of inclusion for the whole street.
Another resident, Matt Johnson, mentioned the lack of communication from Reform regarding the prize and emphasized the financial impact the free energy bills would have on his household. Fraser Hayes, a non-supporter of the party, stated he would donate his winnings if received, expressing his disapproval of Reform and preference for supporting a local charity or the Labour Party.
The situation has escalated from an “energy giveaway” to a potential public relations disaster, prompting residents to seek clarity on Reform’s commitment to fulfilling its pledge. The Telegraph reported that half of the residents on the divided street in Greater Manchester have yet to receive communication about the prize.
In response to the controversy, a Reform UK spokesperson assured that all households on the street would be covered, as promised, and that pending letters would be delivered to the remaining addresses. Meanwhile, Manchester police are investigating a complaint related to the competition, although Mr. Farage remains unconcerned about allegations of electoral rule violations by his party.
Greater Manchester Police confirmed receiving a report on the matter and stated they are reviewing it without specifying the nature of the potential offense. The Mirror has reached out to GMP for additional comments.
