Britain’s recently appointed ambassador to the United States has stirred controversy with leaked comments suggesting that the primary special relationship the US holds is with Israel. Christian Turner reportedly expressed disdain for the term “special relationship” when referring to UK-US ties, deeming it outdated and laden with historical baggage. However, he acknowledged the deep historical connection between the two countries, particularly in defense and security matters.
The leaked remarks, disclosed by the Financial Times, come at a delicate juncture in US-UK relations, exacerbated by tensions stemming from fallout over the Iran conflict and the ongoing state visit of King Charles III in America. The UK Foreign Office swiftly clarified that Turner’s comments, made during a private event with British students in Washington DC, do not reflect the official stance of the UK government.
In the leaked recording, Turner also discussed the political turmoil surrounding the previous ambassador Peter Mandelson and its near-impact on Keir Starmer’s leadership as Prime Minister. He delved into the procedural complexities within the Labour Party rulebook regarding the removal of a sitting Prime Minister, emphasizing the challenges faced by dissenting MPs in initiating such action. Speculating on potential scenarios, Turner hinted at a possible shift in party dynamics based on the outcomes of the upcoming May elections.
The Foreign Office emphasized that Turner’s remarks were informal and not representative of official government policy. The comments, made in early February, were part of a dialogue with UK students visiting the US, and the government maintains its commitment to existing diplomatic ties and partnerships.
