Authorities are currently investigating an incident involving a passenger jet that collided with a light pole during its landing. The United Airlines aircraft was arriving at Newark Liberty International Airport on Sunday, May 3, when it struck a light pole on the nearby New Jersey Turnpike.
The event, which occurred at approximately 2 pm, involved United Airlines Flight 169, a Boeing 767 that landed safely after arriving in the US from Venice, Italy, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
In a statement, United Airlines confirmed that the flight made contact with a light pole during its final approach to Newark but managed to land safely, taxiing to the gate without any injuries to passengers or crew members.
The airline’s maintenance team is currently assessing the damage to the aircraft, while the crew members involved have been taken off duty pending a comprehensive flight safety investigation by the airline.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) announced that it has initiated an investigation into the incident. An investigator from the NTSB will be arriving in Newark on Monday, and the airline has been instructed to provide the cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder for further examination.
A preliminary report on the incident is expected to be released within 30 days.
