Ukraine has raised concerns about the potential use of tactical nuclear weapons by Russian President Vladimir Putin. Ukrainian military commander Roman Kostenko emphasized the need for increased preparedness against the deployment of such weapons.
Kostenko, speaking to Ukrainian news outlet Channel 24, warned that if Russia feels it is losing the conflict, it might resort to using nuclear weapons. He suggested that Russia could launch tactical nuclear weapons ranging from several to dozens of kilotons, targeting military installations, troop concentrations, infrastructure, decision-making centers, and major cities.
To address this threat, Kostenko proposed legislation to separate the strategy for biological, chemical, and nuclear security as a distinct area. He stressed the importance of enhancing readiness for potential nuclear weapon deployment, citing the escalating Russian threat.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently announced a new phase in utilizing Ukrainian weapons to counter Russia’s aggression. The Ukraine Security Service (SBU) confirmed targeting Transneft’s oil pumping and distribution facility in Perm, a critical hub in Russia’s oil transportation network.
The Ukrainian offensive has triggered strong reactions from the Russian government, with Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov labeling the strikes on oil facilities as “terrorist attacks.” Additionally, the Russian Defence Ministry stated that military cadets and equipment would not participate in this year’s Victory Day parade due to the ongoing operational situation.
