Hilsea Lido in Portsmouth, UK, is making a grand return just in time for the upcoming bank holiday weekend after undergoing a £7 million transformation and a closure that lasted four years.
The lido, a prominent landmark in the region for over 90 years since its establishment in 1935, originally functioned as an unheated saltwater pool and was utilized by Team GB’s diving team for Olympic training during the 1936 and 1952 games.
After years of extensive use, the lido faced significant deterioration, leading to concerns regarding health and safety. Consequently, in 2022, the decision was made to temporarily shut down the freshwater facility for much-needed renovation.
Now, following a £7.75 million overhaul, Hilsea Lido is scheduled to reopen on May 2nd with a fresh appearance. The restoration efforts have rejuvenated the lido, complete with a revamped pool base and sparkling blue waters. Upgraded amenities include new toilets, showers, and colorful changing rooms bordering the pool, enhancing the visitor experience.
Funded in part by the Levelling Up scheme, the refurbishment project also introduced new features like a sauna for relaxation, an ice cream parlor, and a food van, providing families with additional enjoyment during their visit.
Excitement surrounds the reopening, with enthusiastic swimmers expressing admiration for the revamped lido on social media platforms like Instagram. The general manager, Judit Kollat, praised the refurbishment efforts by Portsmouth City Council, highlighting the lido’s historical significance and its potential to serve as a community hub promoting well-being.
Duncan Anderson, CEO of South Downs Leisure, echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the importance of Hilsea Lido to the local community and the eagerness to see individuals return to enjoy the pool once again.
Operating hours for Hilsea Lido will be from 6 am to 9 pm Monday to Thursday, closing at 8 pm on Fridays, and open from 7 am to 7 pm on weekends, with last entry permitted an hour before closing. For those interested in booking a swim at the revamped lido, further details can be found on the Hilsea Lido website.
