A significant earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale struck various parts of Japan earlier today, causing buildings to shake in major cities.
Emergency services responded to calls in Nara and Osaka today following the earthquake that occurred around 6:28 pm local time. Residents in the Kansai region reported feeling noticeable tremors and shaking.
The quake’s epicenter was located in Nara Prefecture, with a seismic intensity of 4 felt in Mie, Nara, Wakayama, and Osaka. It originated at a depth of about 70km in Nara Prefecture, and despite initial concerns, no tsunami warning was issued.
Residents in Nara Prefecture described experiencing ‘strong shaking’ during the earthquake, with reports of tremors also coming from neighboring Mie, Nara, Wakayama prefectures, and Osaka.
Local residents shared their experiences, with one resident in Nara mentioning the rarity of such earthquakes in the area and another in Osaka recalling the strong tremors experienced.
Politician Hirofumi Yoshimura urged people to remain calm following the earthquake, emphasizing the importance of staying informed and taking necessary precautions.
Nara Prefecture, although not considered high-risk for earthquakes, is part of the seismic Kansai region prone to occasional moderate tremors due to its location in the Pacific Ring of Fire.
The Japan Meteorological Agency issued an emergency earthquake alert, advising residents in Nara Prefecture to be cautious due to the strong shaking felt.
Following a previous 7.7 magnitude earthquake off the north-east coast last month, scientists in Japan have warned of an increased risk of major earthquakes in the region.
Although the recent earthquake was milder compared to previous ones, the government and meteorological agencies continue to monitor seismic activity and provide necessary guidance to residents in the affected areas.
