When selecting hotels, people usually prioritize factors like location, amenities, and ratings. However, travel experts suggest that focusing too much on the star rating might lead to overspending and missing out on great accommodation options.
Recent research by TravelSupermarket indicates that opting for a 2-star hotel instead of a 4-star one could save an average traveler about £285 per person on a week-long vacation. According to Holiday Expert Chelsea Dickenson, choosing a lower-star hotel doesn’t necessarily mean compromising on quality.
Dickenson explains that star ratings often emphasize facilities over factors that travelers truly value, such as cleanliness, comfort, style, and service. While a lower-star hotel might lack certain amenities like a large pool or room service, it can still offer a pleasant stay in a prime location.
The study by TravelSupermarket highlights that even switching from a 4-star to a 3-star hotel can save around £200 per person, and moving from a 3-star to a 2-star can save about £75 per person.
Many travelers tend to overlook 2 and 3-star hotels when planning trips, assuming they lack quality. However, by checking reviews and photos, they could potentially save significant amounts without sacrificing comfort, especially for city breaks or shorter vacations where extra amenities may not be crucial.
To test this theory, Chelsea booked a 2-star hotel in Mykonos called Boho Suites for a getaway with her partner, James, who has a preference for luxurious accommodations. Despite the lower star rating, the hotel impressed James with its spacious rooms, stylish decor, and unexpected features like a terrace with a sea view and an outdoor jacuzzi.
