Seaside towns often receive negative perceptions, sometimes due to insufficient investment and infrastructure maintenance leading to deterioration in their appearance.
However, despite their not always visually appealing nature, these towns hold a special charm, especially for children. The combination of sandy beaches, arcade games, and ice cream creates a magical experience for families.
Recently, I explored Lowestoft in Suffolk, a town that had been labeled one of the worst seaside destinations in the UK by Which? in 2021. Despite this, Lowestoft has been making significant efforts to improve its image, with substantial investments of £25 million to revitalize the town into a cultural center.
During my visit, we indulged in brunch at Jo Jo’s Kitchen, a local eatery known for its American-style dishes. From soul food favorites to a burger named after Trump, the menu offered a variety of enticing options like stacks of pancakes and huevos rancheros.
Walking along the seafront, we witnessed boats entering the harbor and the charming South Pier with its retro arcade and snack huts. The pier has undergone enhancements, providing access to a smaller beach and picturesque town views. A highlight was the lively arcade where we tried our luck with the 2p machines, albeit without winning the coveted plastic dinosaur jackpot.
One striking building along the promenade is the East Point Pavilion, a Victorian-esque glass structure built in the 90s. Housing a coffee shop and community spaces, the Pavilion also hosted a plant shop and upcoming summer events.
Further down the promenade, we encountered beautiful terraced houses, green spaces, and a plethora of quaint cafes and restaurants.
Of course, the main attraction of any seaside town is its beach. Lowestoft boasts a lengthy stretch of sandy shoreline suitable for families with its flat terrain. Although the water was a bit chilly for swimming during my visit, the beach seemed ideal for a summer day outing.
While Lowestoft has some drawbacks like confusing roads and an average shopping district, its appealing features such as the beach, pier, and friendly locals make it a destination worth considering. The ongoing regeneration efforts are transforming the town’s reputation and creating new opportunities for residents and visitors alike.
With nearby attractions like Great Yarmouth, Lowestoft has the potential to become a strong competitor by embracing its nostalgic charm and unique offerings.
