A tragic accident occurred on Wednesday, May 6, when a passenger bus collided head-on with a fuel tanker truck on Sumatra island in Indonesia. The collision took place on the Trans-Sumatra Highway in North Musi Rawas regency of South Sumatra province, resulting in the death of at least 16 individuals and injuring four others.
According to Mugono, a local disaster management agency official, the bus, carrying around 20 passengers, was en route from Lubuklinggau city to Jambi city when it veered to the right side of the road, possibly due to emitting sparks. This maneuver was an attempt to avoid a more serious incident, but it led to a direct impact with the oncoming oil tanker truck, which was traveling at high speed.
The collision caused a violent impact that ignited a fire engulfing both vehicles, trapping many victims inside. Among the casualties were the bus driver, 13 passengers, and the tanker truck driver and assistant, all of whom perished in the flames. Four survivors were rescued and taken to a nearby health clinic for treatment.
Authorities are still in the process of identifying all the victims as the passenger manifest is being traced. Photos and videos from the scene depicted firefighters battling the blaze and the charred remains of the bus and tanker truck scattered along the highway.
Rescue efforts were hindered by victims pinned inside the vehicles, causing traffic disruptions and complexity in evacuations. As of Thursday, 16 body bags containing remains were received at Siti Aisyah Hospital for identification. The Disaster Victim Identification teams have confirmed the identities of some victims, but the process is ongoing due to severe burns complicating identification.
Police investigators later determined that the accident occurred when the bus crossed into the opposite lane while trying to avoid a pothole, leading to the head-on collision and subsequent fire. The bodies are being processed for transportation to Bhayangkara Police Hospital in Palembang for autopsies.
