Tourists visiting a lesser-known Greek island have faced unexpected delays due to a unique regulation. Many travelers have experienced disruptions to their flights, especially this summer, as airlines adjust schedules amid the ongoing Iran conflict.
On the island of Zakynthos, also known as Zante, an environmental law has resulted in tourists being stranded at the airport overnight without a clear departure in sight. This rule came to light when a TikTok user, NKD Zante, shared their frustrating experience of a prolonged journey back home from Zante.
The issue stems from a specific regulation at Zakynthos International Airport, which was implemented in the early 1990s to protect loggerhead sea turtles that nest on the island’s beaches. These turtles, a vital part of the Mediterranean ecosystem, face endangerment due to various threats, including human activities.
The airport enforces a night flight restriction to safeguard the turtles during their breeding season, prohibiting flights from sunset until 7 am. This measure aims to reduce disturbances caused by aircraft noise and light, which can disrupt the turtles’ nesting behavior.
Similar protective measures are in place on other Greek islands to ensure the safety of these endangered species. Travel advice for Zakynthos emphasizes the limited night flight options due to the conservation efforts supporting responsible tourism and environmental protection.
Recent delays at Zante Airport have also been attributed to the implementation of the Entry/Exit System, leading to extended waiting times for incoming passengers. It is important for travelers to be aware of these regulations and adjust their plans accordingly to support the preservation of the island’s biodiversity.
