Once infiltrated, this malicious software can spy on devices, compromising sensitive information like banking details. It can even create a deceptive lock screen to capture passwords and PIN codes.
The method of Rokarolla infection involves exploiting Android’s capability to sideload applications onto devices, a feature favored by users due to the system’s openness compared to iOS. Users searching for apps like TikTok or Chrome may be led to counterfeit websites displaying authentic-looking software. If tricked, users unknowingly download a fake version of the desired app, along with the hidden installation of Rokarolla.
These rogue apps request extensive permissions, such as accessing notifications, which may seem legitimate, leading users to grant them. Subsequently, cybercriminals can exploit these permissions to steal personal data. Zimperium, the first to detect this campaign, highlighted that Rokarolla targets a broad range of financial, cryptocurrency, and social media apps, utilizing advanced techniques to evade traditional mobile security solutions.
To avoid falling victim to such threats, it is recommended to only download apps from the official Google Play Store. While sideloading may offer flexibility, it poses inherent risks. Activating Google Play Protect can enhance device security against such vulnerabilities, as stated by Google.
