More than 8 million travel mugs branded by Thermos are being recalled urgently due to safety concerns that have resulted in serious injuries, including cases of blindness. The recall notice was issued by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission after reports of a dangerous fault in the mugs’ lid stopper mechanism. When the mugs are opened, pressure can build up inside, causing the stopper to forcefully eject.
The issue stems from certain models of the containers lacking a pressure relief function, leading to incidents where consumers were hit by the ejecting stopper. Some individuals sustained cuts and impact injuries, requiring medical attention. Tragically, three consumers suffered permanent vision loss after being struck in the eye.
The affected products belong to the Stainless King food jars and Sportsman food and beverage bottles lines, totaling approximately 5.8 million food jars and 2.3 million bottles. These items were sold at major US retailers such as Walmart and Target, as well as online through Amazon, between March 2008 and July 2024, typically priced at around $30. The specific models included in the recall are the Stainless King Food Jars (16oz SK3000 and 24oz SK3020) manufactured before July 2023 and the Sportsman Food & Beverage Bottles (40oz SK3010).
The recalled products were available in various colors and featured the Thermos logo. The serial or model number can be found on the container’s bottom. Consumers who own these potentially dangerous Thermos products are advised to cease using them immediately and contact Thermos for a free replacement. Depending on the model, users may need to dispose of the stopper with photographic evidence or return the item using a prepaid shipping label. The products were manufactured in China and Malaysia. Individuals with concerns are encouraged to reach out to Thermos directly for further assistance via their website or customer support line.
