Homes seeking a Sky Q-style upgrade without monthly fees can explore a popular new device now available at Argos. The Manhattan S4-R set-top box, introduced last month, offers similar features to Sky’s premium service, enabling users to record programs, pause live TV, and store content on its integrated hard drive.
The main distinction lies in the cost structure. Unlike Sky Q, which entails ongoing monthly payments, the Manhattan S4-R provides access to over 100 channels without any additional fees after the initial purchase. This device operates through Freesat, utilizing an existing satellite dish to deliver various TV channels directly to your screen. Channels available include BBC, ITV1, Channel 4, E4, Legend, Sky Mix, TLC, U&Dave, and That’s TV 2.
Manhattan highlights the device’s user-friendly interface, built-in search functionalities, and access to a vast library of on-demand content totaling over 60,000 hours. Supported apps encompass BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4, and My5.
While it may not rival Sky Q in premium sports and movie offerings, Freesat’s appeal lies in its cost-free viewing experience. The Manhattan S4-R 500GB variant is currently retailing at £219.99 via outlets like Argos and Amazon, with larger 1TB and 2TB versions set to launch soon. Demand is high, as evidenced by Argos marking the device as “in demand” and “selling fast.”
In a statement regarding the launch, Manhattan COO Alex Arbab-Zadeh expressed the company’s aim to provide Freesat users with a subscription-free experience akin to the T4-R Freeview recorder. He emphasized the S4-R’s enhanced recording capabilities, allowing up to four simultaneous recordings compared to the prior two-channel limit.
Described as an ideal alternative for households seeking a more cost-effective and flexible option to traditional subscription TV services, the S4-R is not the sole disruptor in the TV market. The Pleio puck, a recently announced device, also aims to revolutionize the industry by offering streaming access without requiring an aerial, delivering over 50 live channels over the internet.
Following initial stock shortages, the Pleio puck is back on sale through platforms such as Amazon and eBay, priced at £99.99 and inclusive of a gaming controller plus access to over 200 online games.
Additionally, Sky has announced a 20 percent price reduction ahead of the upcoming World Cup, with prices for the Sky Glass Air TV starting from £4.50 per month. Customers interested in the advanced Sky Glass Gen 2 model, featuring a 4K Quantum Dot display and built-in Dolby Atmos soundbar, will need to pay from £11 per month.
